It’s the new year. It’s a new you. New Year’s resolutions are all about trying to improve your health and wellbeing, to become a stronger, better person—to be the person you always wanted to become. In this blog post, we will be talking about how to stick to a workout routine.
Whether this is for a New Year’s resolution, or you just started working out, it can be hard (really hard) to stick to a workout routine. It’s not just about forming a habit, it’s about breaking bad habits, which is even harder. Continue reading to learn more about how to stick to a workout routine this year and make 2021 the year you finally reach your wellness goals!
Resolutions for a New Year and a New You
Every single year about 60 percent of people make a New Year’s resolution. In terms of the general population of the US, that’s roughly (very roughly) over 160 million people a year who make a resolution for the New Year.
That’s a lot of people who opt-in to trying to become a better self. Unfortunately, of those who decide to start a New Year’s resolution, about 80 to 92 percent fail. So roughly 20 to 10 percent of the population are able to achieve their goal the entire year. Most fail their New Year’s resolution by mid-February.
Some of the most common New Year Resolutions are:
- Complete my New Year's resolution
- Try something new
- Stay motivated
- Be healthier
- Workout
- Diet
Trying to complete a New Year’s resolution as the only New Year’s resolution, can be very complicated and may even be what we’d call a paradox, but we won’t get into that.
For this blog post, we will be focusing on staying motivated to achieve our workout potential, which (actually) will help with dieting and eating healthier (and being a better person). Many of these things are connected. Let’s find out how—but let’s first talk about workouts and routines.
Workout Routines
It’s easier to say you’re going to the gym than it is to actually go to the gym. You may have a workout routine or regimen, but you’re finding it difficult to actually go to the gym (or workout at home).
Especially now, with the Coronavirus, you may not want to go to the gym (which can be potentially unsafe right now). That’s why when it comes to building a workout routine, it’s important to consider everything (and I mean everything).
When building out your workout routine, you want to consider:
- How does this work with my schedule?
- Do I want to work out before/after work?
- Do I want to workout weekends?
- What are my goals?
- What are my expectations?
- Do I want to lose weight? Gain muscle? Both?
These are all important things to consider. Another important factor is the location. If you do decide to go to the gym, try to find one that’s closer to home. Most of the struggle with working out is getting there—getting to the gym, or to your workout room.
Once you’re there, the hardest part is done. Now you just have to exercise. Once you determine the best routine, it’s time to stick to the routine. Here’s how to do that.
9 Tips on How to Stick to a Workout Routine
Sticking with a routine can be hard. But it can be done. You can achieve your New Year’s resolution goals (or your workout goals, in general) by focusing on these suggestions. Sticking to a routine doesn’t have to be hard, and it certainly isn’t impossible, but you have to set yourself realistic goals. You want to set yourself up for success.
Many people want to see results now, and working out doesn’t work like that. It’s all about consistency. If you really think about it, working out is always about consistency. In fact, anything in life is about consistency. Some of these suggestions may help with other things in life. Here are some suggestions:
Get to the Workout
As I said before, one of the most difficult things to do is to actually get to the gym (or wherever you’re going to work out). That’s why it’s so important to factor-in convenience. The further away from the gym you are, the more time you have to avoid the gym.Workout the Way You Want To
Many people who fail to achieve their workout goals do so because they become overwhelmed with what they “have to do.” The thing is, there’s nothing you have to do. It’s all up to you. If you get to the gym, do what works for you on that day. What matters, in the end, is consistency. Consistency is when you see results. You Won’t Always Want to Workout
So you’re not always going to want to workout. That’s fine. It happens. Especially when you first start working out. That’s why the first 2 tips are so important. Try to set up a schedule that works for you. That will make it easier to fight this urge.Tell Yourself A Few Minutes is Enough time
So you’ve hit that point we mentioned above. You don’t want to go to the gym. You know what, that’s fine. Go anyway. But tell yourself you will only do 5 or 10 minutes. You can handle 5 or 10 minutes, can’t you? Of course, you can! The thing is, you’ll want to stay there even longer. Works every time—and if it doesn’t work every time, so what, you did a solid 5 to 10 minutes. Remember, it’s all about consistency.Start Easy
No need to start hard or heavy. Start easy and light. First, if you start too heavy, you can easily burn yourself out. Second (and this is really important), you won’t hurt yourself. If you want to do some cardio on a stationary bike or run on a treadmill, don’t start with 20 mins. Start with 1 minute or 5 minutes. If you feel like after the time has elapsed that you can do more, then do another minute and keep going. You don’t want to overdo it. You can’t lift 200 pounds, or run a marathon right off the bat. You need to work up to it. The gym is all about steady progress.Celebrate the Successes
For days that you are struggling, celebrate your success. Reward yourself with something you enjoy after a gym session. Just try to make sure that what you’re rewarding yourself with is healthy, and not something that could impede your workout.
This means, don’t go straight for food as a reward. Instead, watch a favorite episode of a TV show, or celebrate with a massage or a few extra minutes on your gemstone heat therapy mat.
Don’t Compare Yourself with Others
The gym is rife with competition. Whereas healthy competition is (well) healthy; it’s best to not compare yourself to anyone. Remember, everyone's on their own fitness journey.
You may see someone squat 200 pounds and feel intimidated (or down because you can’t do that) but everyone is on a different path. It takes time to build up to being able to do any workout. You’ll get there, with time, patience, and consistency.
Focus on Your Nutrition
Focus on eating healthier foods high in protein and lean in fat, like grilled chicken. Make sure you decrease sugar intake, and limit simple carbs; instead, opt for complex carbs like brown rice and sweet potatoes. The thing is, if you eat healthier, you will want to work out; if you work out, you’ll want to eat healthy. It’s a cycle that helps keep you going to the gym and that helps develop a healthy lifestyle.Post Workout Recovery
Recovery after a workout is really important. If you don’t focus on recovery, you might be too sore to workout on your next workout day. There are a number of ways to enhance recovery.
One way is to use heat therapy. Heat therapy can help with the recovery process, especially heat therapy that uses PEMF and FIR technology. PEMF, or pulsed electromagnetic field therapy, produces magnetic waves to attempt to stimulate the body.
FIR, or far-infrared rays therapy, attempts to penetrate the body's tissues to offer recovery benefits. Such devices, like the Mesh JT Mat Full 7224 Soft InfraMat Pro® will help you recover faster so you can work out sooner and see those results you’ve been waiting for.
